Nope. You may have come here from our other service, TSP TIPS, but this is entirely different. ProFunds TIPS is a service for ProFunds investors, not Thrift Savings Plan.
However, anyone can invest with ProFunds, simply by opening an account. Scroll down to the "About ProFunds" section for more, or visit their website here.
ProFunds TIPS is a service designed to bring professional investment advice to ProFunds investors. Same advice you would get from a personal investment advisor, but without the price tag that usually comes along with it.
Our investment strategist (PhD, CFP) has been building portfolios for clients for over 25 years, and every one of our TIPS is backed by that same level of experience and history of positive results.
In a nutshell: As soon as you receive a notification that new TIPS have been posted, go to your ProFunds account to make a trade. For the transfer, allocate percentages of your balance to the designated funds, according to the TIPS you received. That's all there is to it.
ProFunds provides different groupings of mutual funds. Each grouping has different characteristics and investment goals; you can learn more about those here.
For now, ProFunds TIPS provides tips for the Ultra, Sector, and Classic fund groupings. You can invest in (and subscribe to the TIPS for) one or more of these groupings, depending on how you'd like to invest.
Yes! By default, you should get email notifications of new TIPS. You can also add up to two additional email addresses for notification, by changing your settings on this page.
Great question! ProFunds is a mutual fund provider, offering flexible and diverse trading options. Unlike Thrift Savings Plan or employer-provided 401k plans, anyone can open a ProFunds investment account with an initial deposit.
Why should you invest with ProFunds? Unlike most providers, ProFunds allows investors to reallocate their funds each business day. Accessibility to investors and flexibility in trading gives us the perfect platform for providing TIPS.
Our investment strategist (PhD, CFP) has been using ProFunds exclusively for his own clients for over 25 years, with excellent results.
No. Day trading involves rapid buying and selling of securities within the same trading day, and can result in huge returns or huge losses. Very high risk. ProFunds TIPS sends reallocation advice once per business day, and TIPS are diversified and follow a long-term investment strategy rather than short-term speculation.
As we mentioned above, anyone is free to open a ProFunds account with an initial investment (like a rollover from a 401k, TSP, or taxable individual/joint account). Be sure to read the ProFunds prospectuses and check out this page to open an account.
No. We are not affiliated with ProFunds at all, we receive no funding from them and are not connected to them in any way whatseoever. We just really like ProFunds as an investment platform, because of the flexibility afforded by reallocating each business day. It's flexibility that ultimately translates to better strategy, and better investment performance.
Fantastic question. ProFunds TIPS is Justin Pearl (software engineer and general tech guy) and Roy Weisert (investment guru). You're probably more interested in Roy's background, and you can read more about him here. He's a retired Naval Aviator (F-4/F-14 backseater), PhD recipient, and Certified Financial Planner with over 25 years of history of building solid investment portfolios for his clients. We also both have civil service backgrounds, and invest our own accounts using these same strategies.
One of us is! Roy handles all the market math, and holds a CFP license as well as a PhD. He's been providing personal, professional investment services for clients since 1993, and still does.
Roy has seven years of synopses available here, summarizing the gains he's made for his clients using ProFunds as a basis. More data is on the way; in the meantime, tell us if there's something specific you want to know!
In financial markets, a "guarantee" is also known as a "lie" and we're not liars. What we offer is the credibility and assurance that comes with 20+ years of professional expertise, a history of positive results, and the knowledge that we invest our own accounts the same way.
Roy's website has a really good description of his investment strategies. Check it out when you have a few minutes!
“No. Because the one guarantee you do have about the market is that it does moves up and down continually. Those movements become trends, which tells us when to be in the market. We also use a Performance Ranking momentum rating to tell us where to be in the market. If you look at the ProFunds TIPS performance chart, you can see how we solidly participate in trending bullish markets.
When a bearish market hits like it did with COVID-19 in February/March 2020, we then mitigate losses by moving into cash and preserving capital, i.e. not earning money all the time. As such, we have found that this stairstep "Trending Investment Portfolio Strategy" (TIPS) works well in building retirement wealth. Large, quick profits are not the primary goal.
